Well this was it. Officially our final fixture.
Unfortunately, we could only raise 7 players and Gary conceded the match. After some consideration Gary and Paul resigned from the league and the season was over. A sad way to end things.
I intend writing a suitable eulogy to commemorate the passing of the team, when time allows.

Again injuries played a major part, we only had 11 players and once we went one down only sporadic resistance was offered. Sadly, the game turned ugly near the end when a large confrontation occurred. One KW player was dismissed as was Connor Baker (rather undeservedly, as it happens).

The scene was more like Rorkes Drift than a football match. Winnie only lasted a quarter of an hour, Arbinder could hardly run, Harris was troubled by an ankle injury, we had about 7 fit players, in all. Despite that, we should have won. Just couldn't score.

SEASON REVIEW
|
|
A fantastic season for the Boys, congratulations to all players and coaches Gary & Paul.
We lead the league from day one following our 7-0 win at Stratford and stayed there all season. Two cup finals in one weekend against the same team and both won. We also had two teams in the final of the Weddington Tournament.
Highlights for me were wins at home to Chapelfields Colts in the league and cup, the 5-3 win against Cov. Sphinx and the 7-0 anihilation of Stockingford. Away from home we beat Kenilworth 3-1 in the cup but the three games which were pivotal in our season were the 5-1 away win against Christ the King Juniors, the 4-3 defeat of Stockingford in the Tamworth Trophy semi final and the 6-2 win against Coventry Copsewood in the cup.
We had never beaten CTK & had lost 0-1 in our previous three meetings. They scored first again this time but, in awful conditions, the Boys proceeded to rip them to shreds and they had no answer to our pace and power. We had to dig deep to beat 'Ford. With minutes remaining we were 1-3 down but pulled it level and won in extra time. The game against Copsewood in the cup quarter final also showed great determination. Playing a side from one league lower than us we found ourselves 0-2 down and within a couple of minutes from elimination. We dragged ourselves back to 2-2 then finished them off in extra-time.

Talk about saving your worst till last. Yes the scoreline is correct. We managed to finish the season in a blaze of mediocrity against a fired up Cov Sphinx.
Lets put this result in perspective. This was our fifth game in a week, including two cup finals. The treble had been won and the boys just wanted the season to finish. This was one game too far. Sphinx obviously felt we'd be in wind-down mode and smelt blood. They opened the scoring after 9 mins then Winnie gave away the first of two penalties. He was, possibly, harshly judged to have pushed a player from behind but the second he conceded almost on half-time was clear cut. In between Lewis had scored with a looping header. Half time 1-3.
Kurtis and Connor had good early chances to drag us back into contention and it might have been a different result if either had gone in. They didn't and, as the rain teemed down, our discipline was washed away with Winnie, Kurtis & Connor picking up yellow cards. Even Steve Baker got sent to the naughty corner!! Sphinx bagged two more goals and the win seemed to mean a lot to them. They deserved it but the defeat didn't detract from the great season we'd had.

We created quite a few decent chances against our local rivals but just couldn't apply the finishing touch. The first half was pretty even but we dominated the second. A goal seemed inevitable as we piled on the pressure but SAA defended well and the boys were unable to break the deadlock.

After clinching the league and cups two days ago anything that followed was bound to be an anti-climax. Chaps had second place to play for and, having lost twice to us already this season, were determined not to make it three defeats.
The first real chance fell to Lewis E. after 24 mins. but their keeper denied him with a great save. Just 9 mins later, though, we did take the lead. Lewis did some great work inside the box and his far post cross was met by Anthony who scored his first goal for us. Chaps nearly equalised a couple of mins. later but the shot was tipped over by Sandy, standing in for keeper Reece.
Chaps had a couple of chances early in the second half but Sandy was equal to them. Lewis, Kurtis & Connor all had opportunities to double our lead but were off target. With 20 mins of the half gone we were caught ball-watching from a throw-in and the ball was lobbed over Sandy to make it 1-1.
There were a few more half-chances for us but we were wasteful & Chaps didn't create anything further. The game petered out and a draw was a fair result.

The Boys found out shortly before kick-off that our remaining rivals for the League had lost earlier in the morning. Thanks go to Christ the King Juniors who ended Chapelfields Colts hopes with a 3-1 win. With the League title clinched the Boys ensured the Treble with their second win over Caludon in successive days.
Well done to the lads & management.

Proof that no two matches are ever alike. Earlier this season we won this fixture 12-0. This time we could only manage the one goal and were fortunate not to concede two or three. Good keeping by Reece ensured the clean sheet.
There was very little of note. We tried to pass the ball about and, at times, did it quite nicely but then spoilt it all by being too casual. both sides created chances but it took until the 2nd minute of stoppage time in the first half for the deadlock to be broken. Lewis Edwards collected the ball with his back to goal, turned and hit a beauty of a left-foot shot that flew like a bullet into the net. And that was it, really. We seemed a bit flat but credit must go to CTK for a spirited display. They defended doggedly & battled for everything as well as almost scoring.
No doubt the Boys' minds were on next weekend when they play two cup-finals. Saturday its the Tamworth Invitation Trophy against Caludon Youth & on Sunday its the Coventry League Cup against...........Caludon Youth.

Going into this top of the table clash St. Nicolas held a 10-point lead over Chapelfields although the visitors had two games in hand. Chaps’ desperately needed to win to have any hope of catching the league leaders but St. Nics cemented their place at the top with a hard fought win.
St. Nics had an early chance after just 3 minutes when Binder worked his way into the penalty area but his toe-poke fell straight to the keeper. Connor then had a chance to open the scoring but his low shot was easily saved. Chaps’ soon had their first attempt on goal when Motsheweni found some space but his shot was saved.
With just 8 minutes on the clock clearing header from Anthony was picked up by Rowsey, he showed great strength to shrug off challenges and found the net with a well-struck shot. It took just another five minutes for the lead to be doubled. Chris managed to get a low shot in through a crowd of players and the ball found the left hand corner.
St. Nics were dominating and pushed for the third goal that would probably have secured the win but neither side, in fact, could fashion any quality strikes on goal. The remainder of the second half was played out with no action of note. Half-time St.Nicolas 2 – Chapelfields 0.
Six minutes into the second half Connor plucked a great ball from Winnie out of the air but his shot on the turn sailed high over the cross bar. Chaps started getting into game more, knowing they needed a goal to put the pressure on. They had a half-chance from a throw in but Alex Lacey shot wide. On 54 mins. It looked like the visitors had pulled a goal back. The ball was played out to their left but the shot struck the side netting. Four mins later Chaps’ went even closer when a Lacey header from a free kick bounced off the post. Two corners ensued from this but St. Nics’ defence held firm.
The game was going through a scrappy phase, St. Nics were struggling to hold the ball and get their passing game flowing but this was down to Chaps’ improved performance. They were battling to get themselves back into match but despite the pressure St.Nics’ defence was not going to yield and the game ended without any further scoring. Full-time St. Nicolas 2 – Chapelfields Colts 0
St. Nicolas just deserved the win but Chapelfields pushed them hard and no doubt they will be looking for revenge in the reverse fixture coming in the next few weeks. Well played both sides.

Having thrown away the lead three times in our recent league match against Kenilworth the Boys were in no mood to lose this league cup tie. It took only two minutes for us to get off the mark. Conner teed up the ball and hit a high, looping shot. It looked like their keeper had it covered but he was possibly dazzled by the sun & it dropped over him into the net.
St. Nics were giving Kenilworth little time on the ball & we were playing a quick, pressing game. On 16 mins Kurtis went on a great solo run but when he lost possession Kenilworth broke. A long ball split our defence, their striker managed to knock it round Reece as he came bombing out of goal and an equaliser looked on. As their player ran into our penalty area Winnie came rushing back & took the ball off the player's toe just as he was about to pull the trigger.
A minute later Conner hit a superb shot which their keeper saved. From the resultant corner the same player went just wide with a header. On the 19th minute Kurtis fed Arbinder with a good first-time ball which lead to our twinkle-toed midfielder running at Kenilworth's defence. He beat at least two men before firing a hard, low shot home to make it 2-0.
Kenilworth were pretty rattled and were struggling to get into the game. However, we seemed to ease off a bit and they began putting a couple of attacks together. With just three minutes remaining of the first half Kenilworth broke down their left wing, the cross was headed back across our goal and the ball was volleyed in to make it 2-1 at the break.
The crucial goal came after only 9 mins of the restart. Scot went on one of his mazey runs, turning their full back inside out. As he bore down on goal he was brought down for a penalty. Conner took the spot kick and hit it so hard it went through the net so that, at first, the lads weren't sure he'd scored. He had & it was 3-1.
That was the end of the scoring. We controlled the game well and Kenilworth hardly threatened our goal. Praise must go to our defence, twins Amman & Aaron were superb at full back & with Lewis E. & Winnie heading everything that came their way. The whole side played well, the midfield controlled the game & Conner was a constant threat.
Our latest signing, Anthony Stephenson, made his debut as a late sub. Welcome from us all & I hope you enjoy your time with us.
What this signing means, however, is the departure of Jack McElvenny. Jack Mac was one of only three originals remaining. He played 139 competitive games for us & scored 44 goals. My favourite memory of him was seeing him turn despair into joy against Frank Parkers in October 2005. He felt he was to blame for two of their goals & was distraught at half time. However, Jack smacked in two second half goals to help us win 5-3. The joy on his face was a pleasure to behold. Jack is a very good squash player who has the chance of playing at an extremely high level. As a result he can't devote time to footy. We all wish you the best and good luck with the old squash.

22nd March 2009 - Rugby Town Juniors (A) 1 - 6 (W)
|
|
Scorers: Baker (3): Garchay: Amman Sakaria: OG.
A great win for the Boys who played some fine football against a dogged Rugby team who had previously pushed Kenilworth hard, claiming a draw.
It was clear Rugby intended to defend for their life. We attacked from the start and the pressure was constant so it was with some surprise that Rugby actually took the lead. In the 16th minute Winnie miscontrolled a cross ball, their striker latched onto it and headed for goal. Reece reacted well and came sprinting out. He managed to reach the ball first and put in a clearing kick. Unluckily, it ricocheted off Winnie, who was belting back to redeem his mistake, and it rolled into our net.
Rugby's joy was short lived, though. Two mintues later Conner pounced on a rebound off their keeper to equalise. We continued to create chances. Kurtis was on fire down the right wing & was supplying plenty of crosses. We just couldn't seem to get on the end of them apart from Lewis E. but his header went straight into the keeper's arms.
The first half was nearing its close & it looked like it would be a frustrating period. Then Rowsey put a neat ball through to Conner who finished well. We weren't finished, with just one minute to go before the interval Winnie hit a good pass out to Lewis E. on the left, he crossed in for Connor to head home at the near post to complete his hat-trick. Half-time 3-1.
Changes were made for the second half, Sandy & Aaron Gill came on for Rowsey & Kurtis & Lewis E. dropped into midfield. Sandy nearly scored after 3 mins. He linked well with Scott but put the ball over the crossbar when scoring looked easier. Ten mins. into the half & it was 4-1. Arbinder hit a shot which took a wicked deflection, a great assist was provided by Lewis E.
Winnie then hit a fantastic shot which hit the bar but a minute later it was definitely all over. Aaron G. hit a low cross in from our right only for one of their defenders to slice the ball into his own net.
With 12 mins to go Amman got in on the scoring act when he hit a shot into the ground that bounced over the keeper to make it 6-1. This rounded off a very commanding performance which earned high praise for their manager.

This was the first game for both sides for five weeks and I'm sure both would have preferred easier opposition to get them back in the swing. We knew this was going to be a difficult game but having lead three times it was very disappointing to throw it all away.
It only took us 8 mins. to take the lead, Connor latched onto a long Fludey throw and squeezed his shot in at the near post. A few minutes later Kenilworth nearly equalised. They had two corners in succession and hit the cross bar with a fine header. Almost straight away, Winnie nearly made it two but, from a tight angle on the left, his shot struck the post and bounced clear.
We'd had a couple of warnings from Kenilworth corners & failed to heed them after 20 mins when a great header from one of the smallest players on the pitch went in.
Fludey then went close three minutes later but saw his shot go over the bar. Our lead was restored a minute later when Aaron G. struck home following a free kick. Half-time 2-1
Kenilworth drew level after only two minutes of the second half. The next twenty odd minutes passed without too much goal mouth action, both sides had a couple of efforts but defences were mainly on top.
Then, on 67 mins. St. Nics took the lead for the third time. Aaron Sarkaria struck home is first goal for the club leaving us just thirteen minutes to close the game down.
Nothing could legislate for Kenilworth's equaliser just three minutes later. Keeper, Sandy, had the ball in his hands and threw it out to Fludey who was in the right back position. Unfortunately, he didn't know the ball had been thrown to him, Kenilworth nicked it and made it 3-3. Sandy was pretty distraught but don't worry about it, mate. Everyone makes mistakes, it's all part of the learning process.
With the draw looking the likely result, things went from bad to worse for us as Kenilworth made it 4-3 with only a couple of minutes left. Virtually on full-time we almost grabbed a draw. From a corner a close range shot was blasted straight at their keeper who managed to hold onto the ball.
This was a good, competitive match which neither side deserved to lose but that's how things go. Well played Kenilworth.

7th December 2008 - Mount Nod (Colts) (H) 20 - 0 (W) Coventry League Cup
|
|
Scorers: Baker (3): Winn (4): Mewies (3): Gill (3): Rowse (3): Taylor: Garchay (2):OG.
With St.Nics currently sitting on top of the A League & Mount Nod near the bottom of the C League I don't suppose our opponents came to Ambleside expecting anything but defeat. How to treat a game when you expect to win is difficult. In the past the Boys have been guilty of treating the other team lightly and have struggled to win games that should have been easy victories. They cannot be accused of doing that this time, however. From the off we played with pace and determination, trying to pass the ball & play good football. It took a few minutes to open the scoring but we built up a 7-0 half time lead.
Mount Nod could not have anticipated what would happen in the opening 17 minutes of the second half. We scored our eighth within the first minute and added nine more just over a quarter of an hour later. The scoring slowed down and only three more goals were added to make it 20-0 when, with twelve minutes to go, both managers and ref called a halt to proceedings.
I don't like to see lads humiliated but in this case Mount Nod should take pride from the fact that we respected them and played as well as we could. They came up against a good side in great form and despite the score they kept going, didn't moan or fall out with each other. It would have been easy for St. Nics to start showboating and trying to play flashy football which, in my opinion, would have been insulting & disrespectful to the opposition. St. Nics kept their team discipline and played well & Mount Nod didn't fall apart despite the overwhelming defeat.
There were a couple of lighter moments during the game. I couldn't help but chuckle when, with the score at about 16-0, I heard a voice from the far side of the pitch shout, "Come on Mount Nod, just enjoy yourselves." The lads were having a rare old time, I must say. And finally, shame on 'Mad' Max Gadsby for his pathetic dive in the penalty area, we really needed another goal, didn't we.
Well done to both teams & good luck to Mount Nod for the rest of the season.

16th November 2008 - Austrey Rangers (H) 5 - 0 (W) Tamworth Invitation Trophy QF
|
|
Scorers: Baker (3): Rai: Gill.
There was great anticipation for the visit of Austrey, champions of the Tamworth League. A hard game was expected but Austrey's attitude this Tamworth Trophy quarter final was rather disappointing. They have a number of players who represent Tamworth FC in the Midland Junior Premier League and decided to rest some players because of an upcoming game. St Nics have several players who also play in the same league but this was a game we were taking seriously.
Austrey took to the field with ten men & the game quickly turned into something akin to an attack v defence practice match. We had a couple of chances in the first 9 mins, Connor shot straight at the keeper & Rowsey was unable to get his shot on target. A minute later though, Connor picked up a long clearance by Sandy (playing in goal) and blasted a shot in from near on 35 yards.
That was the only goal we could manage in the first half. Austrey defended well & proved difficult to break down. Our defence was almost redundant & Austrey didn't register one effort on our goal.
For the second half Aaron G. swapped with Sandy in goal. Five minutes into the half Arbinder missed an easy chance and other attempts followed at regular intervals but we lacked that clinical finish. Finally, after 55 mins. Connor made it 2-0, heading home a cross.
Connor completed his hat-trick after 63 mins. when he slid the ball under their keeper. This was the cue to drop him back to keeper & Aaron G. made the most of his release by making it 4-0. With ten mins. to go Sandy opened his scoring account for the season with a neat chip.
Rowsey was then put through with only the goalie to beat. As he pulled his leg back to shoot he was kicked and fell. To most onlookers it should have been a penalty but, instead, Rowsey was sent off for swearing. Very strange.
The last few minutes petered out & a game that could have been a good contest was over.

Sometimes things just go right for you and this was certainly one of those days for St.Nics. Arbinder opened the scoring on 6 mins after being put through on goal by Connor. We continued to press and created two or three chances but couldn't increase our lead. SAA had their opportunities, too, but struggled to get anything on target.
Half an hour passed and half-time loomed. In the 36th minuted SAA put a shot wide & from the ensuing goal kick Aaron Gill tucked away our second with Connor once again being the provider. With the whistle almost about to blow for the break Connor latched onto a poor goal kick & calmly netted the third goal.
We started brightly from the off in the second half, after just 3 mins Rowsey latched onto a good cross from Scot only to hit the post. Three minutes later Connor shot just wide but he then put the result beyond doubt when he headed home Max's neat chip.
Scot nearly made it five but struck the post & then he linked up with Kurtis who did make it five. Two more goals came in quick succession in the 65th & 68th minutes. Arbinder scrambled one home then Aaron Gill pounced on a long shot fumbled by the keeper to make it 7-0.

19th October 2008 - Deer Park (H) 10 - 0 (W) Tamworth Invitation Trophy
|
|
Scorers: Rowse (3): Baker (2): Edwards: Winn: Taylor: Gill:Amman Sakaria.
As the result suggests, Deer Park provided little resistance and it was only through some good goal-keeping and wasteful finishing that the scoreline wasn't far greater.
There isn't a lot I can say, really. We were 4-0 up at half-time which wasn't a true reflection of our dominance. It took until the last 15 minutes or so for us push the score up into double figures.
Although they were outclassed, fair play to Deer Park for sticking at it & well played to their keeper, in particular, who saved them from an even greater rout.

5th October 2008 - Coventry Sphinx Juniors (H) 5 - 3 (W)
|
|
Scorers: Baker (3): Winn: Taylor.
Sphinx came to us having won both their firtst two fixtures & they were confidant theycould get something out of this match. It was certainly a bruising encounter with tackles flying in from both sides. Sphinx opened the scoring following a moment of indescision by our defence but Connor brought us level with a glancing header from a corner. All this good work was undone by yet another bit of defensive dithering & Sphinx re-took the lead. There was a nasty clash of heads involving Winnie and Quirkey from Sphinx. Winnie came off dazed but Sphinx's influential midfielder had to go to hospital for treatement to a cut. We wish him well. Half-time 1-2. It took only 17 seconds from the restart for us to draw level. The ball sat up beautifully for Winnie who hit a lobbed shot from some 30 yards out right over their keeper into the net. Within ten minutes of the second half we had added to Winnie's strike to take a 5-2 lead. Scot & Connor, twice, scored to knock the stuffing out of Sphinx and we played out the rest of the game fairly comfortably before allowing the opposition to score right at the end. This was a cracking match with some good performances all round. Connor took his hat-trick well but my man of the match was Kurtis who put in a superb all round display in midfield.

28th September 2008 - Christ the King Rovers (A) 0 - 12 (W)
|
|
Scorers: Edwards (3): Gill (3): Baker (2): Mewies (2): Gadsby: Flude
CTK were out of this game before they knew it had started following an opening nine minute blitz which yielded four goals. Lewis started like a train with a hat-trick, all from corners with Connor adding the fourth. Goals followed at regular intervals, Max scored his second of the season & Fludey struck home a beaut as we opened up an 8 - 0 lead at half time. With the game won, the lads played some neat passing football & had CTK chasing shadows at times. It was one-way traffic but we could only add four more goals to round off a resounding victory.

21st September 2008 - Christ the King Juniors (H) 0 - 1 (L)
|
|
For the third game in a row against CTK we were on the wrong end of a 0-1 score line. As in the previous two, we didn't get what we deserved and, at the very least, a draw would have been a fair result. The ball seemed to spend most of it's time in the air & the competitive nature of the game did not make for flowing football. The defenders were getting the better of the strikers & chances were few & far between. CTK's goal came from a strong run down their left wing. Amman made a superb tackle in the box but in the scramble the ball broke for their player whose chip evaded both Winnie & Lewis E. and it was stabbed home from close range. We probably just had the better of the second half but, as they always seem to do, CTK defended well. With Connor suspended we lacked that killer touch in front of goal but Max nearly scored at the death. He followed up a rebound off their keeper but with the goal begging he could only hit straight back at the keeper.

14th September 2008 - Caludon Youth (H) 4 - 2 (W)
|
|
Scorers: Gill (2): Winn: Edwards:
Caludon provided far sterner opposition than last season & we had to scrap hard for this win. Aaron Gill netted twice in the first half but defensive sloppiness allowed Caludon to make it 2-2 at half time. Lewis Edwards & Winnie came on for the second half and both were on the score sheet to give us the victory. Winnie blotted his copy-book, unfortunately, by being sent off for a stupid kick on one of their players.

7th September 2008 - Stratford Town Colts (A) 0 - 7 (W)
|

Scorers: Taylor;Gill (2); Edwards (3); Gadsby.
Gary & Paul were busy in the 'transfer market' this summer & brought in seven new players. Keeper, Reece Compton (Stockingford AA), Tom Flude (Weddington Thistle), Scott Taylor & Kurtis Mewies (Bedworth Eagles) twins Aaron & Amman Sakaria & Arbinder Garchay (all Cov. Jaguar). They join Connor Baker, Lewis Edwards, Max Gadsby, Aaron Gill, Jack McElvenney, Sandy Rai, Lewis Rowse, Chris Wainwright & Paul Winn from last years squad.
Only four of last years squad were in the starting XI as all the new boys made their debuts. We settled quickly & played some neat football, it certainly didn't look like the lads had only played together once before. Despite our dominance we were struggling to find the net but we remained patient & Scott got us off the mark. Aaron G. added a second as we lead 2-0 at half time.
Lewis E. came off the bench to show he can play as well up front as he can in defence. He completed a hat trick as we finally made the pressure count. Max finally got his first goal & Aaron G. helped himself to a second.
We could well have scored more but for some wasteful finishing but an opening win of 7-0 will do.
Several lads left us at the end of last season, they were George Goodman & Tom Sharrock ( two of the 'originals'), Danny Pritchard, Joe Sharpe, Ben Davies, Alex Hall, Chris Newton, Liam Potter & Kieran Wilson. Many thanks for all your efforts boys and we wish you well where ever you may go.
